The Importance of Time Synchronization
|
Most computer networks rely on clocks. When the clocks in these
computers do not agree with each other or with the correct time,
several negative consequences may arise, including:
-
Operations Failure
Automated events like data backups or order processing may
break because they do not start at a certain time or because
tasks that are supposed to be carried out on different
computers cannot be done in the proper sequence.
-
Data Loss
When you create, modify, or backup a file, the computer file
system updates the time stamps for that file.
Certain applications require these time stamps in order to
be reasonably precise and accurate. If the file has an
incorrect time stamp, some applications may perform an
incorrect action or even crash. For example, when creating
a backup of recently changed files, the computer may
incorrectly skip archiving some files.
-
Security Holes
Since server access logs are a compilation of information
from different hosts, it is essential that the time stamps
are correct. Bad timekeeping may compromise the server's
security because log files are inaccurate, and thus,
administrators cannot trace hacker activities.
You can use Express TimeSync to keep your
computer clocks in sync with the correct time to protect your network from
these threats.
